BHS Girls Varsity Team Wins the League Championship

The Benicia High School Girls Varsity Cross Country team had an outstanding season this year.

It has been a very long time since varsity girls cross country team has won the League Championships but that is exactly what they did this season.

Coach Julie Moore came into the season knowing that she had a very strong boys team, but had no idea that the girls team would accent the boys team so nicely.  The team had four returning varsity runners, one senior and two juniors.  They were joined by two exchange students, seven freshmen, a junior and a senior.

In the first league race of the season, the team finished with a very low score of 22 points.  In cross country the team with the lowest score wins and the score is based on the finish position of the first five finishers for each team.  In that first league race the top five Panther finishers were all freshman girls.

These five freshmen girls went on to win all five of the league meets.  They also earned "All League" honors.

During the season these five young lady Panthers set some new school records.  In a three meet run, they finished one, two, three, four, and five in the race earning the best score you can get in a cross country meet of 15!  They also finished in the top 7 at the league championship meet which has never been done in the history of Benicia High school.

But the most notable thing about these five athletes is that they are all "freshmen".   They have three more years and have set their goal to go to the State meet as a team.
