Cancer Survivors Walk to Fight

The Benicia Relay for Life kicked off Saturday morning with speeches and a band.

The Benicia Relay for Life kicked off at 9:00 a.m. Saturday morning, May 21, with speeches by cancer survivors Mayor Elizabeth Patterson and 14-year-old Drew Botello.

After the speeches the the relay got under way in earnest with the ceremonial first lap walked by cancer survivors.  They were joined on the second lap by caregivers and were led on their trip around the track by the Panther marching band and color guard.

Drew Botello told of the doctors diagnosing him with leukaemia at age one.  "I don't have a lot of memories of having cancer except celebrating when I was four and the treatments were over," he told the crowd.  "I know that I have already fought the biggest battle of my life."
