Commission to Review Request for New Door

The door is the last step before a new business can open on First Street.

The Historic Preservation Review Commission will consider a project Thursday characterized as a minor exterior modification by staff but it's anything but minor for the applicant who is trying to open a new business on First Street.

The item is a request to add a new door to the Olson Building located on the west side of First Street between West E and West F Streets.  The door will allow direct access to Charlie’s Attic, an antiques and collectibles store that currently shares a street address and a door with Char’s Hotdogs.  The building where both businesses are located, while in the historic district, isn’t a historic building.

Charlie’s Attic owner John Sigler has been working with city staff for 4 months to get his business opened doesn’t think the door should be a big issue, especially since it is on the consent calendar.

“It’ll take six weeks to build the door,” said Sigler.  “I’m going to be shocked if there’s a problem with the door.”

Sigler doubts he’ll be able to have a door or a grand opening by the day after Thanksgiving, typically the busiest shopping day of the year.

“If we could do it (a grand opening) by mid November that would be great,” said Sigler. “But, I’m not going to do it without a door.”
