Parks Commission to Review New Lighting

Commissioners will get a report on additions to City Park.

The will hear a report Wednesday from Planning and Community Development staff about proposed streetlight improvements around City Park.

The special meeting of the commission will be held at the new Benicia Community Center at 6:30 p.m. in Program Room 2.

The improvements are part of the Intermodal Facilities Project funded through a $3 million grant from the Metropolitan Transportation Commission.  The project includes improvements to the area at the west end of Military West.

It is hoped that improving transit facilities will encourage more people to use public transportation. Adequate lighting at a transit center is a safety issue and the historic nature of the new lights means a better gateway into the historic downtown, according to the staff report.

The funds for the project come from Regional Measure 2, which increased bridge tolls $1 to provide funding for transit projects.
